Clusier

Categories: Be a Smart Consumer, Curious

I first noticed Clusier in 2008. It has immediate appeal, but I waited two years before shopping there. Struggling with my weight, buying new clothes was not high on my agenda. Two years later and 30 pounds lighter, my wardrobe needed updating if not replacement.

The Space

The time had come to go inside the shop I had admired from the outside. The collection in the window was unique and because I have always found shopping for myself somewhat intimidating, somehow the size of the store brought comfort. Frequently, disappointment follows high expectations , but Clusier did not let me down. The space is modern and bright, merchandise layout invites exploration, and the welcome is warm.

The Collection

Pierre-Benoit Duhamel, founder and owner, hand picks and curates the ready-to-wear collection. He has an obsession with quality and finding family owned manufacturers with a history of style such as Carmina. A legendary Spanish company, Carmina has been making footwear in Mallorca for four generations.

The overall look is very Italian. Featured collections include Pal Zilerei, Jacob Cohen, Luigi Bianchi Mantova / L.B.M. 1911, Luigi Borelli, and Bagnoli Sartoria.  There are other brands from all over Europe and North America. Readers should visit the Lookbook to get a better idea of the collection. In addition to the great brand selection, there is a made-to-measure offering for suits and shirts made in both Canada and Italy.

The Service

Most men that I know are self-conscious shoppers. I know highly successful professionals and businessmen routinely involved in making difficult decisions and confrontational negotiations that are irrationally afraid of the menswear salesman. Easy-going with a sense of humour best defines the Clusier service style. Getting customers a good espresso or, occasionally, a glass of wine or a cocktail seems to be almost as important  as the sale. They are expert in their field and can advise on looks from the very formal to the very casual looks.

The pandemic tests retailers, but good retailers innovate. Clusier now offers a shop-at-home service . Based on information gathered during a virtual appointment, an advisor will put together a collection of items to meet your needs. These are sent to be tried on in the comfort of home. Pick-up of the unwanted items is arranged and then the shopper is invoiced for whatever articles are kept.

I believe in sustainable fashion. As a first step, I buy the best quality that I can afford, merchandise that stands the test of time in both fashion and construction. Duhamel’s philosophy of selling only well-made, aesthetically pleasing merchandise supports me in the goal of buying better and buying less. Well-purchased quality garments remain fashionable for years and do not wear out easily.
